What does Dolan’s Electioneering for Trump on “Fox & Friends” Tell Us About the U.S. Catholic Church, and Why Are Catholic Experts Surprised?

I have been tracking Cardinal Timothy Dolan since he came to my city in 2009. Like the president, whom Dolan praised publicly this week, Dolan likes money, power and doesn’t really believe in much. That any Catholic cleric would engage at all with “Fox and Friends,” which is part of the de facto communications team for Donald Trump, is morally suspect in the extreme. Bu like Trump, Dolan has long enjoyed a kind of “King of New York” status. Like Trump, Dolan has a temper, and likes his puissance. Like Trump, Dolan is a bit of a bully and a bit of a man for sale to the highest bidder. Unlike Trump, Dolan is not without charm.

Unlike Trump, Dolan does not appear to be a rapist. Timothy Dolan is, however, like several of his brother bishops in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, likely an accessory — after the fact — to many sexual assaults involving a participant in the Vatican Child Sex crime ring cover up. Dolan allowed priests he knew had raped children to remain in ministry. He moved money around in dioceses he ran before coming to New York in order to protect it from being seized in clergy sex abuse lawsuits. He paid men who raped children to leave, setting them free without bothering to track them. He has signed off on the hiring of private investigators to “investigate” clergy sex abuse plaintiffs; this, while encouraging Catholics to come forward to the church for healing and legal remedies. Dolan got caught with his hand in the cookie jar when his brother bishop William Bransfield was caught using West Virginia Catholics’ donation dollars to bribe bishops and purchase charter flights, mansions and fine wines and spirits in bulk.

In January of this year, Pope Francis recently appointed Dolan to investigate his brother/neighbor bishop for the rape of a child 45 years ago.
